What is it about?

Cochlear implants restore sound sensations to deaf subjects. Usually they can understand speech quite well after a few months use of the CI. However other aspects of sound quality such as identifying who is talking are harder to perceive. This research indicates some of the limitations of CIs which may be attributed to sound processing, electric hearing via a CI and how the brain processes information.

Why is it important?

Many people who could benefit from a cochlear implant do not get one. Some of the reason for this may be due to the poor performance of CIs for anything other than understanding speech.

Perspectives

Once you identify limitations in concrete terms it may make it easier to figure out how to fix them.
