What is it about?
Determining if and how the song, device, and headphone type chosen influences the preferred music volume of college students has not previously been investigated in a controlled manner. This research investigates if and how each of these variables affects the volume setting college students like to listen to music at through headphones.

Why is it important?
The results found that the use of over the ear headphones and computers to listen to music are safer than other types of headphones and the use of a cell phone because the level of sound reaching the ear drum was the softest when college students adjusted the music to their preferred volume. This is important as listening to music for extended periods of time at high volume levels may result in an increased risk of hearing loss.
Perspectives
The authors hope this article increases the awareness of the risk of hearing loss with long term use of personal listening devices, particularly with headphones, at loud volume settings.
