What is it about?
This study looks at psychosocial barriers contributing to incompletion of speech home exercise programs (HEPs) for individuals with cleft and craniofacial conditions. This study assesses the barriers involved in neglecting implementation of speech HEPs within this population.

Why is it important?
Currently, minimal research exists in identifying and understanding the hindrances to consistently practicing HEPs outside these designated speech therapy sessions. SLPs often find families grappling with challenges impeding completion of HEPs and ultimately assuming the role of counselors to seek viable solutions to ensure compliance.
Perspectives
We hope this research study is replicated across centers and geographical locations to glean further insight into factors that prevent parents, legal guardians, or caregivers from consistently enforcing completion of HEPs. Additionally, this research promotes further discussion around ways approved cleft and craniofacial teams can support caregivers to encourage completion of HEPs.
