What is it about?

Hearing-related lifestyle and associated demands differ between individuals. We propose a questionnaire which retrospectively assesses these aspects for everyday listening situations. This questionnaire is called Hearing-Related Lifestyle Questionnaire (HEARLI-Q) and consists of several listening situations that respondents can rate on frequency of occurrence, importance to hear well, difficulty to hear, and hearing aid satisfaction. In the current article, we show that the questionnaire outcomes have excellent reliability, the listening situations are generally complete and relatable, and the number of questions is acceptable.

Why is it important?

As hearing requirements vary between persons, it is important to take them into consideration during the process of hearing rehabilitation. Understanding the types of auditory environments that people experience in everyday life can help tailor treatment plans to individual needs.

Perspectives

The questionnaire has potential for both research and clinical use and can be utilized to increase our knowledge of people’s hearing-related lifestyle, hearing demands, hearing difficulties, and hearing aid satisfaction in everyday listening situations.
