What is it about?

Precipitation patterns spontaneously formed by Mn-Fe-based Prussian blue analogues (Mn-Fe PBAs) in agarose gel were investigated over wide concentrations ranges for the outer (0.10 ≤ [Mn2+] ≤ 0.70 M) and inner electrolytes (0.01 ≤ [[Fe(CN)6]3‒] ≤ 0.35 M) using visual/SEM observations.

Why is it important?

In order to apply its high Cs affinity, detailed understanding is needed about the patterning of the PBA precipitates and their crystallization states in organic gels.

Perspectives

Overall, the agarose gels seem to better support crystallite ripening than the water-glass gels, and thus the formation of definite periodic bands is somewhat relatively suppressed in the agarose gels. These findings should prove useful for developing real applications of the Mn-Fe PBA patterns formed in gels, including pulsatile 137Cs adsorbent delivery devices.
