What is it about?

Single-Ion Magnets are molecular magnetic switches. In this work we explore the design principles of these magnets using a constrained, planar coordinating group in a Co(II) complex. Extensive structural and magnetic studies, backed up by theoretical modelling shows that the Raman process causes relaxation of magnetisation in an applied field.

Why is it important?

The processes responsible for magnetic relaxation are extremely varied and the structural details that favour one relaxation mechanism over another continue to puzzle scientists. This paper demonstrates that very subtle changes in the outer coordination sphere of a molecular magnet can have significant effects on it's magnetic performance.
