What is it about?

Separation of carbon dioxide from synthesis gas is a requirement for further processing. Efficient separation is however rather challenging and, often, energy consuming. Here we report robust inorganic membranes that show great potential for removal of CO2 from syngas in a very efficient, cost-effective and sustainable way.

Why is it important?

Our findings for the first time show that high flux inorganic membranes can be more economically attractive for upgrading of synthesis gas and selective removal of CO2 than polymeric membranes. We also show that, in addition to being environmentally friendly, the separation process relying on our membranes would be much more space-efficient than the process relying on absorption or polymeric membranes.
