Why is it important?

Usually we think there are a small number of accessible crystal structures for a material, e.g. graphite or diamond for carbon, rutile and anatase for TiO2, etc... However, many other structures may exist as epitaxially stabilized thin films! This work provides the motivation to synthesize these new structures because they may have superior catalytic properties compared to the bulk stable phases.
