Complexation of water and an organic molecule with peracetylated cyclodextrins in nonpolar solvent.

Why is it important?

Complexation properties of peracetylated cyclodextrins are sporadically studied. The apolar molecule is able to form inclusion complex with water, and in case of peracetylated gamma-cyclodextrin the guest molecule can exclude the water molecule(s) from the cavity.

Perspectives

It is commonly believed that the cyclodextrin cavity is hydrophobic. This publication reveals the opposite and demonstrates that the complexation in organic solvents is possible. Deuterated organic solvents always contain some water, couple of hundreds of percent, but owing to the high molecular weight of cyclodextrins and their derivatives the molar amount of this minimal impurity is comparable with the subject of analysis and it can become disturbing in 1H-NMR.
