What is it about?

Elevated substrate temperature growth and structural templating each offer control over the structure and morphology of phthalocyanine films. Here we combine the use of copper iodide (CuI) and elevated substrate temperatures to investigate their effect on the growth of a non-planar phthalocyanine system.

Why is it important?

By using careful surface and crystal structure characterization we assess the impact of a copper iodide layer on a non-planar phthalocyanine. Unlike planar molecules this system exhibits multiple diffraction peaks indicative of multiple molecular orientations. The insertion of a copper iodide templating layer, whether grown at ambient or elevated substrate temperature, results in a change in the overall out-of-plane orientation of the VOPc film as shown by XRD measurements.
