What is it about?

This paper deals with the UV-properties of hexaniobate and hexatantalate ions [HxM6O19]x-8, (M= Nb, Ta). These species are found in alkaline solutions of niobium and tantalum. UV-based methods were used to directly determine the 1st protonation constant of hexaniobate ions. This article can be of interest for academic researchers or industrials working with niobium or tantalum samples.

Why is it important?

A simple and low-cost method was developed for the determination of the niobium content of both synthetic and industrial samples. The pKa of [HNb6O19]7-/[Nb6O19]8- was determined as a function of the temperature and ionic strength. The UV spectra of [Nb6O19]8- and [Ta6O19]8- were computed by TD-DFT. A review of the literature data is given
