What is it about?

Deprotonation of 5-(hydroxyimino)quinolin-8-one (L) by fluoride is useful in fluoride detection by visible spectroscopy but is not suitable in basic condition. Corresponding zinc complex of L provides means to study such detection process through much sensitive fluorescence emission as tool. The zinc complex and the fluoride complex of L are structurallly characterized.

Why is it important?

It is an intriguing fact to find out type of species formed by interaction of an analyte with a receptor. Thus, receptor design and elucidation of structure of analyte with receptors are important. In this study such an approach was followed .

Perspectives

The mechanistic aspects of anion recognition and to find out receptors from small molecules as well as by their metal complexes will continue to attract attention.
