What is it about?
We present a model of the lung alveolar barrier that closely mimics the real in-vivo situation. An ultra-thin, porous and elastic membrane was developed on which human cells can be grown. This resembles the lung alveolar air-blood barrier. In addition, this membrane can be cyclically stretched to reproduce the respiratory movements. We demonstrate that the mechanical stress has an important impact on the cells behaviour.
