What is it about?

We prepared a complete substrate scope to support the newly discovered alpha-addition pattern in phosphine chemistry. This alpha-addition pattern is different from the commonly taught beta-addition in undergraduate organic chemistry.

Why is it important?

This demonstrates a new reaction pathway besides Michael addition in phosphine chemistry, which can be utilized to design new molecular archetectures by phosphine catalysis. In contrast to the conventional method, the 1,3-dipoles generated from phosphine and alkynes can be entrapped with suitable electrophiles such as aldehydes, which proves the pattern of phosphine addition toward alkynes.

Perspectives

A brand new field in phosphine chemistry through other addition pattern is created. Other new addition patterns includes alpha, gamma, delta and so forth, which becomes possible in phosphine addition toward alkynes.
