What is it about?

The present work demonstrates that simultaneous determination of epinephrine (EPI) and acetaminophen (ACT) can be performed on a novel multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), nickel hydroxide nanoparticles (NHNPs) and Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) composite modified glassy carbon electrode (MWCNTs-NHNPs-LDH/GCE). The electro-oxidations of EPI and ACT were investigated by using cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and chronoamperometry (CA) methods. Under optimum conditions application of DPV method showed that the linear relationship between oxidation peak current and concentration of EPI and ACT were 0.04-60 µM and 0.02-40 µM with detection limits of 11 and 5 nM, respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied to determinations of these compounds in human urine and blood serum samples.

Why is it important?

ACT works by lowering cyclooxygenase products preferentially in the central nervous system, where oxidant stress is strictly limited. The stimulatory effect of ACT on cyclooxygenase activity in intact cells was abolished in the presence of electron-donating co-factor EPI.33 Therefore, development of a simple, inexpensive, sensitive and accurate analytical method for simultaneous determination of EPI and ACT would be of great importance.

Perspectives

This work describe a simple method for a sensitive determination of important compounds of epinephrine and acetaminophen, which has potential to use in routine analysis in human body.
