Why is it important?

Ions formed in the ESI ionization region of a mass spectrometer from neutral precursors may also be formed by fragmentation of higher mass precursors in the interface (in-source CID). This paper demonstrates that FAIMS separation prior to mass spectrometry enables the selective detection of an impurity (N-methylpyrrolidine, NMP) present in the antibiotic cefepime, without interference from NMP formed by in-source CID.
