What is it about?

We developed an easy method to produce monolithic form of κ-carrageenan aerogels in which potassium thiocyanate was used as a specific ion. In a systematic study, we found the factors which can influence the physicochemical properties of monolithic form of κ-carrageenan aerogels. This open porous material can provide a matrix with a chelating function which can be used as host in many applications.

Why is it important?

To our best knowledge it is the first study reporting the synthesis of monolithic κ-carrageenan aerogels and the detailed analyses of the materials properties. The specific ions used in this study played an important role to produce monolithic aerogels being pure, intact in shape and size and having lesss shrinkage.
