Why is it important?

Tris-cyclometalated platinum(IV) complexes with 2-phenylpyridine and related ligands are very promising as photocatalysts. In fact, their unique combination of highly efficient and long-lived luminescence with a strong oxidizing character in the excited state represents an advantage over the most commonly employed ruthenium(II) or iridium(III) photocatalysts, which may lead to the discovery of new types of photocatalyzed reactions.
