What is it about?

In this paper, five local brands of whole milk samples have been investigated for the determination of residues of the veterinary drugs abamectin and ivermectin using a sensitive, accurate, precise, and practical on-line solid-phase extraction coupled LC-ESI-ion trap-MS/MS system by the standard addition calibration method.

Why is it important?

Abamectin (ABA) is widely used as a herbicide, insecticide, and anthelmintic and ivermectin (IVE) is an antiparasitic drug. Both of them belong to Avermectins, which are called macrolide antibiotics. The extensive use of ABA and IVE as veterinary drugs in animal husbandry endangers people's health indirectly through the food chain. Since the consumption of milk and dairy products has recently increased significantly in Taiwan accompanied by the rapid growth of the economy, the supervision, monitoring, and regulation to prevent veterinary drug abuse which may cause large amounts of drug residues in food derived from food producing animals and affect human health are important and necessary.

Perspectives

It was a great pleasure to write this article for letting people aware of the effect of drug residues in food. This article also leads to food analysis groups contacting me and ultimately to a greater improvement in food analysis research.
