Why is it important?

The work shows that for competitive immunoassays the used label is of minor importance. This result can be expected from theoretical considerations. The effect is called "affinity limitation" and means that for competitive immunoassays the affinity of the antibody to the analyte is of utmost importance.

Perspectives

The performance of a competitive immunoassay can be improved by developing a better antibody, but usually not by changing the label.
