What is it about?

Lowering operating temperature is helpful to accelerate the commercialization of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). However, lowering operating temperature also decreases electrical performance. In this study, we developed a anode-supported SOFC with thin-film electrolyte and nanostructured cathode, which showed high electrical performance at low operating temperatures below 600 oC. Therefore, this method used is promising for improving electrical performance of SOFCs at lower temperatures.

Why is it important?

The key for improving electrical performance of SOFC at low temperatures is to decrease the resistance of electrolyte and increase the electrochemical performance of electrode. In this study, a thinner doped ceria film with thickness of 3 micron was prepared by a spray dry co-pressing method. The application of dense thin-film electrolyte decreases the resistance. In addition, by using nanostructured cathode, high electrical performance was obtained at low operating temperatures.
