What is it about?

This review describes the cyclization mechanism of squalene into pentacyclic triterpenes, hopene and hopanol.

Why is it important?

For long times. many eminent chemists have engaged in the studies of how acyclic squalene molecule is cyclized into cyclic triterpene, especially focused on the stereochemistry . However, the mechanism using the enzyme has not been carried out. This review has introduced the enzymatic mechanism by bacterial triterpene cyclase
