What is it about?

Current methods, using glucose, to determine glucosinolate in rapeseed are not accurate. This paper describes problems with current methods and ways to overcome them.

Why is it important?

Glucosinolates are toxic anti nutritional components of canola meal which is used for animal feed. It is essential to measure the content to avoid excess consumption by livestock

Perspectives

The glucose method for glucosinolate determination is a rapid and inexpensive test providing accurate determination of the compounds in animal feed. Rapeseed is the second biggest oil crop globally and the meal is used for animal feed. Alternative HPLC or other methods are slow, require highly expensive standards and cannot be carried out in laboratories without the necessary equipment. This method has been compared with more expensive techniques and shown to be accurate and easily carried out by competent laboratory personnel
