What is it about?

Variation of α-cyclodextrin hydration order changes both crystal packing and receptor properties of its intermediate hydrate. So, partially hydrated cyclodextrin remembers its hydration history

Why is it important?

The results contribute to the understanding of the role of water in inclusion properties of cyclodextrins. This goes far beyond the well-known concept of "high energy water" and can be extrapolated to proteins, which have the same hydration history effect under low-water conditions.

Perspectives

The observed effect of hydration order on inclusion properties of α-cyclodextrin can be used to adjust the preparation procedures and technology for its solid inclusion complexes with drugs.
