What is it about?

This article reports a straightforward method for the synthesis of strongly luminescent and highly photostable bis-cyclometalated platinum(IV) complexes.

Why is it important?

The quest for highly luminescent transition-metal complexes remains an important objective because of their relevance in research areas concerned with the interconversion between light and chemical or electrical energy and also the development of luminescent biological probes and chemical sensors. The development of luminescent platinum(IV) complexes is still in its infancy, probably because of the strong focus on Pt(II) systems. We believe that Platinum(IV) complexes may become a valuable class of luminescent complexes because they can reach very high quantum yields and long radiative lifetimes.


This work opens a new way in the development of luminescent platinum(IV) complexes. We expect to obtain new derivatives of the reported type with improved properties.
