What is it about?

Schistosomiasis is the second most prevalent typical disease in the world, affecting millions of people, the majority being young children. In this paper, two antischistosomiasis compounds, praziquantel (PZQ) and trichlorfon (TCF), have been incorporated into the conducting polymer polypyrrole. Controlled release of TCF was obtained.

Why is it important?

Polymers containing antischistosomiasis agents could be used to form devices to treat water supplies to minimise the danger caused by this devastating disease.
