What is it about?

Sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, such as empagliflozin (EMPA), are used to treat diabetes type 2. They are thought to have anti-tumor effects by acting on tumor metabolism and growth. This study shows that EMPA has ambivalent effects on different colorectal cancer cell lines.

Why is it important?

It is highly relevant for cancer treatment to understand the mechanisms by which SGLT2 inhibitors can have anti-tumor effects.

Perspectives

Further research is needed to determine the relevance of this drug class in cancer treatment within a precision medicine context.
