What is it about?
For Ni micro-orifices under applied pressures, we found that the flow rate of water through the orifices decreased to negative values, whereupon Ni and/or organic substances existed in and around the orifice, related to material science, organic chemistry and origin of life.

Why is it important?
In this study, by using circular nickel micro-orifices with diameters of 5–100 µm and applying pressures from 0.5 Pa to 0.6 MPa, we found that the velocity of water flowing through the 5–25 µm micro-orifices was 1.4 to 2.5 times higher than that through macro-orifices under low pressures and was close to the velocity of the inviscid fluid which possesses no viscosity, under high pressures. Notably, the flow rate often decreased gradually or steeply to negative values under applied pressures, whereupon either nickel or nickel and organic substances were found in and around the orifice. Generation of Ni is connected to material science and that of organic substances is related to organic chemistry and origin of life, because the present author suggested by the previous article that Ni comes from the base material of the orifices used and organic materials are synthesized in micro-orifices from the inorganic components in air or CO2 dissolved in water by the action of the hydroxyl radicals induced by flows.
Perspectives
One of the authors, T. Hasegawa, has conducted research for a long time about the flow of water and dilute polymer aqueous solutions through small sized orifices. Recently, T. Hasegawa and A. Ushida, have focused the research on the flows of these fluids through micro-orifices. They reported several anomalies in the previous articles and the present paper is the conclusive one.
