What is it about?

Infection by the poliovirus sometimes causes severe motor nerve paralysis and has been a serious threat to humans. Thanks to the constant human efforts through the development of vaccines and the widespread use of their inoculation, polioviruses spreading around the world has dramatically decreased, and we are now aiming for the last spurt towards eradication. The World Health Organization has begun to exercise strict control over clinical and related specimens that cannot be ruled out as possibly containing poliovirus.

Why is it important?

While strict controls on polioviruses are in place, the isolation of various viruses is essential for surveillance and control of viral infections. This study presents the results of depriving the cell line most utilized for virus isolation (Vero cells) of only its susceptibility to poliovirus.

Perspectives

Vero cells and cell lines derived from them have been used to isolate and study a variety of viruses; for example, coronaviruses, Ebola virus, measles virus, and rubella virus. The cells produced by this research will help in various researches and also contribute to the eradication of poliovirus.
