Using the DNA barcode methodology reveals hidden diversity within the Serrasalmidae family

Featured Image

Why is it important?

In this work we generated DNA barcodes for 67 species of fish from the Serrasalmidae family, which allowed us to identify hidden diversity in these Neotropical fish. By integrating molecular data with morphological characters, it has now been possible to formally describe four species of Serrasalmidae previously unknown to science.

Perspectives

The generation of DNA barcodes for members of this family will help in understanding the diversity of this group of fish, as it directs efforts towards a more detailed analysis of this diversity.
