Perspectives

The effects of unbalanced sex ratios on behavior are fascinating. When there are more men than women, monogamy increases and men are more committed to children and long term relationships. When there are more women than men, women are more willing to engage in casual sex, men marry later in life, and men are less committed to long term relationships. As an auditory researcher, I was pleased to be able to show that unbalanced sex ratios can be immediately perceived on the basis of brief audio clips of crowd noise.
