What is it about?

My coauthor Diego wanted to perform some experiments in Cu nanowires, his supervisor Matheus, ordered him to do a plasma cleaning first. This is how they discovered this degradation mechanism which reduced the nanowires to nanoclusters of copper oxides.

Why is it important?

First, nanowires are important raw materials in electronic and learning that they cannot be plasma cleaned in important per se. Naturally a secondary aspect is the production of nanometric copper oxides, themselves of use in electronics.

Perspectives

My participation in this work was minimal, I showed how thermodynamics explained why the residual levels of oxygen in the chamber allowed the formation of copper oxide.
