What is it about?

Obesity is a risk cause for type II diabetes. In this paper we show that insulin regulates fat synthesis through a feed-forward loop acting through translation. Before it was not (well)* known that the increase of translation induced by insulin was by itself responsible for increased fat synthesis * the message was buried in scattered observations, however.

Why is it important?

Our findings add up on the growing evidence that translational control drives not only cell growth but also metabolism, differentiation and that its alteration is the culprit for disease.

Perspectives

This work was developed by the hard work of several good scientists and took many years. We tested many other hypothesis which did not work before ending up on our conclusions. I still think that the molecular mechanism is to be understood.
