What is it about?

This paper introduce a new kind of identification number of mass spectra. This new number, which we named SPLASH, will be the same for identical spectra so that we can easily see if a certain mass spectra is already known in databases. However, the number also to see which mass spectra are more similar, which allows it to be used to find relevant data.

Why is it important?

Previously, it was really hard to see if a certain mass spectra was already known. This gave trouble when synchronizing distributed databases, like the international MassBank network. With this new SPLASH identifier it can be easily see which data is already available in a mirror database and must not be copied again.
