What is it about?

Gibbon's et al had just published a paper showing that a dyed polymer exposed to polarised light gives orientation to a contacting Liquid Crystal. This News and Views article explains the effect in terms of light induced isomerism of the dye, causing rotation from an absorbing to non-absorbing state.
