What is it about?
The constant adaptation of the energy supply within the central nervous system, in response to changes in energy demands as a direct consequence of a stimulus, is paramount to its function. The existence of a mechanism by which one eye's stimulus implies a vascular response in the other eye was never documented in the human species before, and sheds new light on this complex working mechanism.

Why is it important?
The existence of this now demonstrated mechanism implies revisiting current explanatory mechanisms that have never considered its presence. Also, as strongly suggested by the data in this work, this crosstalk mechanism seems to be modified in diabetic patients compared to healthy controls, which may contribute to a better understanding of the disease.
Perspectives
We hope this article and findings draw attention to this new neurovascular coupling mechanism that may contribute to better explaining all fundamental knowledge in this field and help deepen our knowledge of the human central nervous system.
