What is it about?

Dry eye treatment is currently not satisfactory because the commercially available eyedrops do not have the natural anti-inflammatory proteins of the tear. The closest body fluid in terms of protein composition is probably the plasma. This publication involved 10 patients who underwent plasma treatment using plasmapheresis to prepare the formulation.

Why is it important?

Since this method involved a sterile, closed system of preparation, it may be more acceptable for regulatory bodies in various healthcare systems. In the more commonly encountered autologous serum preparation, there is no universally agreed protocol.

Alternatives to this including the processing of umbilical cord plasma at a blood bank using a similar strategy.
