What is it about?

Developed for use in a study on the gains, losses, and specific mediators in changes that come along with career transitions, the Upward Career Transitions Scale (Rigotti, Korek, & Otto) assesses upward career transitions. The five items capture changes in job position, gains in responsibility related to leadership, job content, and budget, as well as higher salary and new privileges. Participants were asked whether they had changed their position in the organisation since filling out a prior questionnaire from one year ago. If this was the case, they were asked to tick one or more of the listed changes in their job.

Why is it important?

Career transititions, even when they are considered to be a promotion, can result in a mix of resource gain and resource loss. As a net resource gain is important for well-being, commitment, as well as performance, the evaluation of resource gains and losses can help in career counseling, as well as relationship building with new employees.

Perspectives

The paper, in which we used the upward career transition scale was accepted for publication within a week of first submission - a rare event!
