What is it about?

This study explores how self-forgiveness is understood and experienced in Chinese culture. While most previous research on self-forgiveness has been based on Western perspectives, this study focuses on Chinese individuals to provide a deeper, culturally specific understanding. Through 51 Chinese participants' responses to a qualitaitve survey, researchers identified four key themes in self-forgiveness: 1. Be strict with oneself 2. Be benevolent to oneself 3. Be responsible to oneself 4. Be harmonious with others The study found that "being harmonious with others" is especially important in the Chinese context, shaping how people approach self-forgiveness. These insights can help counselors and mental health professionals better support Chinese individuals who are struggling with guilt, failure, or past wrongs.
