What is it about?

It is easy for people who smoke cigarettes to count the number of cigarettes they use per day. It is much more difficult for people who vape e-cigarettes to keep track of how much they vape per day. Researchers want a reliable way of estimating how much people vape per day, so they can look at how it affects health.

Why is it important?

There is no consensus yet on how e-cigarette vaping is measured, and what we need to build consensus is to test the relationship between how much people say they are vaping and the nicotine levels in their body. This is one of the first studies to test this relationship.

Perspectives

E-cigarettes have been around for more than a decade, but due to rapidly evolving technologies, marketing, regulations, and popularity of use- researchers are still paying catch up. We need a simple and accurate way of measuring the heaviness of e-cigarette use, so we can learn more about the long-term health effects of these products.
