What is it about?

Our paper presents a review of the published scientific evidence regarding Accelerated Long-term Forgetting (ALF); a particular aspect of memory which may be a reliable way to discriminate between Alzheimer´s disease and healthy aging. It describes the initial findings made in patients with epilepsy and Alzheimer´s disease and covers theoretical aspects of interest related to integrating the ALF concept within the framework of memory models, explains which mechanisms are involved and reports findings in animal models. It also focuses on clinical aspects, the relevance of the construct within the Alzheimer's disease continuum as a new potential cognitive biomarker of AD pathology and the different possibilities currently available to assess it in daily clinical practice. We also discuss the implications of these findings for future work.
