What is it about?
Yesterday your crush rejected to go on a date with you. You likely feel embarrased and sad. How do you deal with those negative emotions such that they won't hurt you long term? This is what experts call emotion regulation. People use a variety of techniques to make themselves feel better - but do we know all of them? This project uses AI to map all the different ways that people use to regulate their emotions.

Why is it important?
Mapping emotion regulation techniques helps us understand which types of emotion regulation are beneficial, and which not so much. But there's more: How we extract emotion regulation techniques can potentially be transferred to other psychological concepts such as personality.
Perspectives
Psychology needs to look at questions from multiple angles to create a coherent understanding of a topic. Using AI and natural language processing is an angle that was previously inaccessible to the field. Interdisciplinary teams and researchers create new ways to conceptualize and measure psychological concepts and that's something I am excited about.
