What is it about?

Resulting conflicts of the adherence to masculine gender roles (gender role conflicts) were revealed as a determinant for men’s self-reported distressing sexual problems. Overall, men expected their physicians to ask them about their sexual health. However, gender role conflicts were associated with men’s disinclination to be asked about this topic.

Why is it important?

The close association between masculinity and sexual dysfunction should also be reflected in international classifications of sexual dysfunction. The issues of masculine norms for sexuality can also be addressed by physicians during a patient’s clinical visit. Physicians should be sensitive to men’s gender role conflicts and try to shape an environment in which men can talk about sexual health issues without feeling restricted by gender role norms.

Perspectives

It was interesting, at some points challenging and amazingly revealing to do the structured interviews with patients about their sexuality and sexual health issues. This was the first time for me to talk to people so directly about their sexuality. I am thankful to all participants.
