This paper discussed the process and principles used to move beyond co-located behavioral services to create an integrated model of behavioral health services in pediatric primary care that can provide early intervention and prevention of behavioral health conditions in children.

Why is it important?

Integrating behavioral health into pediatric primary care is an emerging area to address the rising incident of mental health concerns. Most models adopt a co-location approach where the behavioral health specialist is located within primary care, but focuses on providing services to children already experiencing mental health concerns referred within the practice. In contrast we describe a model wherein behavioral health provides see all children during well-child pediatric visits along side the pediatric provider in order to prevent behaviors from escalating.

Perspectives

In order to achieve truly integrated behavioral health the pediatric practice and behavioral health specialist need to have a shared mission and vision, utilize quality improvement principles to facilitation implementation of universal prevention services, and focus on transforming the system of care not just expanding
