What is it about?
Symmetry, viewing time and frequency of viewing have positive effects of peoples like of objects. Here, we show that a type of visual illusion known as illusory contours also have a powerful effect on object liking.

Why is it important?
Greater understanding of subtle perceptual processes that influence emotion can help develop real-world behaviour change. For example, such processes could be built into advertisements or games to promote healthy/positive choice behaviours.
Perspectives
This paper was inspired by Erle, Reber, & Topolinski's (2017) excellent work on effects of perceptual process on preference judgements. We gathered original data and identified effects new effects in Erle's data thanks to their open access data. The growing open science movement is a boon to the field and, in this circumstance, has led to new work, secondary research and international collaboration.
