The development of math skills from grades 1 to 12: Novel findings using person-oriented approach.

What is it about?

The development of math skills is widely studied but usually general developmental trends are reported and less attention is paid to individual developmental trajectories. Accordingly, this study investigated developmental trajectories of math skills of students aged 6-16 years old showing that less than half of students tended to stay in a similar skill-group throughout these years.

Why is it important?

The study suggests that, in terms of math skills, most students have diverse developmental trajectories from elementary school through the end of middle school. Studies like this can provide insight about what types of skill and knowledge profiles are evident in classrooms, which, in turn, could help to design better intervention methods for different types of students.
