What is it about?

This paper summarizes the outcomes of 12 different reviews that have examined the impact of universal school-based social and emotional learning programs for children from preschool through high school These reviews which evaluated over 500 controlled outcome studies found that these programs were associated with significant improvement in children's academic performance, attitudes, social behaviors, and personal and interpersonal skills, and significant reductions in behavioral problems and emotional distress.

Tens of thousands of schools in the United States and around the world have used social and emotional programs and our findings indicate that research, which has also been conducted around the world, has found these programs have led to many improvements in children's personal and school life.

Perspectives

Social and emotional learning programs can contribute to young people's quality of life, subjective well-being and their academic performance and every school should consider how these interventions can be incorporated into everyday educational practice.
