What is it about?

Several factors influence our liking of artworks. We have shown that subjective person-dependant features are the main influences of aesthetic appeal and that the formal features of the artwork although important have a small effect on aesthetic preferences.

Why is it important?

We were able to directly compare the effect of different influences of aesthetic appeal by conducting a large-scale study involving 1190 artworks and 404 participants, that utilised a modern multi-dimension model of emotions and state-of-the-art-computational algorithm to analyse formal features of artworks. Thus, providing strong empirical evidence towards the millennia-old discussion on aesthetic appeal.

Perspectives

I hope this article convinces people that there is no one truth regarding aesthetic appeal or beauty. Anyone can like anything. We should embrace diversity of taste as that is what truly makes us human.
