What is it about?

We used an innovative image analysis technique, namely the wavelet transform, to detect size and orientation variations in the initiation of failure for rock samples deformed in the laboratory. This allowed us to distinguish at least to deformation mechanisms for the rock samples depending on the applied stresses.

Why is it important?

With this study we demonstrated that image processing techniques can help us to untangle the complex brittle deformation behaviour in rocks, and in turn to better understand our rock fail when external stress are applied, such as is the case for earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Perspectives

Writing this article has been beautifully challenging because I had to extend my studies far beyond the usual geological knowledge. I have enriched my research portfolio with new methods .
