What is it about?

The objectives of this paper are (1) to deduce the origin of the Duvanny Yar Yedoma permafrost deposits from its grain-size properties, and (2) to develop a new volume-based approach for quantifying organic carbon in permafrost.

Why is it important?

With regard to climate change, it is predicted that Yedoma permafrost will be transformed from carbon reservoirs to carbon sources if these organic-rich sediments thaw and greenhouse gases are subsequently released. Therefore, a better understanding of this type of permafrost is essential.
